Tipitina’s New Orleans is one of the most unique wedding venues I’ve photographed. The space has all the electricity of a beloved club in a city obsessed with music. Jen and Matt’s Tipitina’s wedding was a dream to photograph. The day was beautiful and chill so the couple could focus on having the best time with their friends and family.
Tipitina’s New Orleans is one of a kind. As a wedding venue, it offers a vibrant experience for music lovers. The signs and murals are iconic. Where else can you get married with a portrait of funk legend Professor Longhair smiling over you?
You might wonder exactly how getting married at Tipitina’s works. Here’s what you can expect:
Since Tipitina’s New Orleans isn’t your typical wedding venue, it can be tricky to find logistical information without contacting the venue directly. The venue isn’t on the usual wedding vendor directories. That means details like capacity are a little unclear. A music industry website lists the capacity as 800. Chances are you can fit all your guests and more on the dance floor!
Anyone who loves the music scene in this city knows that Tipitina’s New Orleans is an institution. The club opened in 1977 and is named for the Professor Longhair song by the same name. If you look closely at the club’s sign, you’ll notice that the hand is holding a banana. It’s the last remnant of the juice bar the venue once housed. Tipitina’s continues to be an important mainstay in New Orleans music culture in the 2020’s.
Tipitina’s is located Uptown at the intersection of Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the French Quarter. If you or your guests want to stay nearby, there are lots of beautiful hotels, short-term rentals, and restaurants in the area.
Jen and Matt live in Brooklyn, but Uptown New Orleans holds a special place in their hearts. They both attended Loyola (at different times). Jen even was born in the city and has lots of family there still. They couldn’t wait to celebrate with Jen and Matt!
Tipitina’s New Orleans is a dream wedding venue for Jen, too. She used to flyer for bands like Galactic at venues like Tipitina’s while she was in college at Loyola. In exchange, she got free tickets to some incredible shows. Matt and Jen have seen a lot of great shows at Tipitiina’s together, so their wedding day had an element of nostalgia.
At the start of the day, Jen and her bridesmaids got ready in the greenroom. Each had a flannel shirt customized with an image of an album cover. It set the stage for a fun, relaxed day focused on connecting with the people who mattered most.
Matt met Jen out front of Tipitina’s for their first look. Then we hopped in the car to go to Audubon Park. It was only a five minute drive, and it was nice to get a little greenery in some portraits.
Back at Tipitina’s New Orleans, Jen and Matt had a wedding featuring some favorite Jewish traditions. They had a beautiful chuppah decorated with lush florals. During their reception, their guests lifted them up for a rowdy hora.
Tipitina’s New Orleans was a dream venue for this intentional, joyful wedding. Everyone felt at ease, and Jen and Matt were free to soak it all in. I loved documenting this day.
When I delivered Matt and Jen’s gallery, Matt left the kindest review:
“It was important to my wife and I that we looked like ourselves, like real people, and that the photos all had a natural look to them. Seeing Alyssa’s work, we knew this was the style of her work, and we’re super happy with all the shots that she captured. She’s awesome, and [I] would 100% recommend [hiring her].”
